NARCOA

Welcome to NERCA

NERCA or the NorthEast Rail Car Association is a NARCOA - North American Railcar Operators Association affliate serving members in the New England, New York and surrounding areas.

Since 1997, NERCA has provided a variety of excursions on short line and mainline railroads. To date, we have operated on over 45 railroads, serving over 400 NARCOA members on over 300 excursions totaling almost three million motorcar miles.

All of our excursions are NARCOA events and all operators must be NARCOA insured, rulebook certified and mentored. Safety first has been our goal and we have lived up to that.

01/22/2012 - 3rd DAY ADDED TO NH RUNS

We have recieved permission to add a third day to the NH excursions that preceede the annual Hobo motorcar weekend.

Starting in Whitefield, we will travel to Littleton on track that will be ripped up this summer. If time permits, we will add additional milage or possibly do the run twice. Stay tuned for more info.

We have received late news that the WNPA will be two days. Olean to Hornell on Saturday and on Sunday we will go from Driftwood/Emporium. Because of thier work load this will be a two day this year. The website will be updated in the next few days to reflect this.

The 9th Annual Snowflake Run has also been confirmed.

The Mass Central has also been confirmed.

NERCA has confirmethe Lehigh Railway for the dates of September 15th and 16th for an old favorite. Flooded out last year, this railroad has grown with the sand traffic and you will see many new lengths of track.

01/08/2012 Cape Cod - Fall River /New Bedford

NERCA has confirmed the Cape Cod - Fall River and New bedford excursion for September 8th and 9th. Because of track conditions and turning of motorcars, no cars over 5200 lbs and nu Hi-Rails will be allowed. All cars must have turntables. More information to follow.

11/30/2011 - Fairmont Birth Record Room

NERCA has received an acknowledgment letter from the Martin County Historical Society for it contribution for our contribution for the renovation of the "Fairmont Birth Record Room". These records of the "Birth Papers" of the Fairmont Motor Cars built in the United States. Soon you will be able to get information on the birth of your motorcar direct from the museum. These records were in danger of being lost but the officers and affiliates at the 2011 NARCOA Board of Directors meeting stepped forward to insure these records were saved.

11/29/2011 - "Join our "Yahoo Group" added

Added to the website is the button on the Home page to join our Yahoo Egroup. If you are not a member already, it is a chance to ask the group questions o excursions, events and motorcars and parts for sale on a local basis. You may fill out the site for "no emails", "as-posted" or in a daily digest". The ahoo Egroups also allows you signup for other groups including railroad maintenance, historical societies and even gardening.

Today, we started adding to possible excursions little gray box in the upper right hand corner show the excursions date and Seton time, location, expected costs , total RT(round trip) mileage and special notes on the excursion lile "No Mentoring", "2 day" and "motel included". Hope this helps out in getting a little more information on the excursions.

11/27/2011 - Our new official Site

We have gone live. We have notified NARCOA that this is our new site and also put a notice on the old www.nerailcar.com site for you to come to this site. We are excited about the capabiilities of the new site and features we are adding.

We are looking for your photos to add the the website. Any photos of a NERCA excursion will be accepted. You may put your watermark on the photos but we will not at this time be adding captions nor 'donated by' acknowledgements. That may come in the future as we add more/

We are anticpate restoring the entire he FAIRMONT photo library as time permits..

Today, we started ading in EXCURSION HIGHLITES to the individual excursions. An example of such is listed under the Snowflake Excursion, We added the date, Seton time and location, expected mileage and any major notes avout the excursion. We are not clear on what we will do with excursions like the Finger Lakes or the MMA were an excursion may go anyware from any point from year to year.

Policies

NERCA's policies go beyond NAROCA's as far as safety is concerned. We have added several additional rules to make our excursions safer and to conform with railroad logic in our part of the country. It is your responsivilty to review and be aware of these changes.

In addition, we use Ticket Leap for processing all our excursions. Thru Ticket Leap, all processing of payments are done thru PayPal. Please review these documents and be aware of these guidelines as you make a reservation for all excursions.

While non of these plans are completed to date, we are planning or working on the following excursions. The Cape Cod Central Railroad is a heritage railroad located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Originally founded in 1999, it operates a variety of excursion trains from downtown Hyannis to the Cape Cod Canal during spring, summer, and fall. Recently, it has expanded service in a limited capacity to offer rides that travel the reverse of the normal route. It also offers special trains during the spring, summer and fall that travel to Wareham. Most of their trips are made during the Scallop Festival or during the summer when the Family Supper Train and Scenic Train depart together from Buzzards Bay. It offers daily sightseeing trains, a Family Supper train, Brunch and Lunch trains, and an Elegant Dinner train that was rated one of the top 3 in the nation by the Food Network. Past offerings have also included special Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas trains.

Ongoing politics have prevented restoration of passenger rail service from Cape Cod to the Boston area, causing the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge to be used less, except for train service to Camp Edwards (where it picks up trash at the Upper Cape Regional Transfer Station) and dinner trains.

The Cape Cod Central Railroad has three locomotives, and generally uses two on each train in a pull-pull configuration due to a lack of convenient switching locations. ALCo RS-3M #1201, nicknamed "Lulubell," was originally built in May 1951 for the New York Central Railroad as locomotive #8246. It has also served Penn Central, Amtrak, Connecticut Central, and Providence & Worcester railroads. #1201 did not run during the 2011 season; since it was at the end of its useful life, it was scrapped on 9/17/2011.[1] EMD GP-7 #1501, along with its sister engine #1502, was originally built in 1952 for the Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay railroad. The 1501 recently emerged in a new paint scheme identical to sister railroad Massachusetts Coastal's paint scheme. The engine is now in service on Cape Cod Central trains. Sister 1502 has not run in several years and a return to service is not likely in the foreseeable future.

The railroad has 8 cars in service, as well as a Budd RDC which is currently being restored. The Barnstable (#101), Sandwich (#102), and Bourne (#103) cars are used for sightseeing tours, and are all former Long Island Railroad 2700 series commuter cars. The kitchen/generator car (#250) is used on dining trains, as all meals served are prepared on board the train. The Cape Codder (#200) lounge car is a vintage piece of equipment originally from the Illinois Central Railroad. Much of the interior is original, including a number of pieces of plate glass. The Sandy Neck (#201), Great Island (#202), and Race Point (#203) dining cars were all built in the early 1940s and have since been completely restored. This Railroad should not be confused with, although is affiliated with the newly formed Mass Coastal - the freight railroad that transports trash off of the Cape.

The Conway Scenic Railroad (reporting mark CSRX)[1] is a heritage railway in North Conway, New Hampshire. The railroad operates over two historic railway routes: a line from North Conway to Conway that was formerly part of the Conway Branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad, and a line from North Conway through Crawford Notch to Fabyan that was once part of the Mountain Division of the Maine Central Railroad. The Conway line is owned by Conway Scenic and the Mountain Division is owned by the State of New Hampshire.

The railroad's main terminal is located in historic downtown North Conway in the Mount Washington valley. The station complex has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979.

Conway Scenic has been a very gracious host to NERCA for many years. This excursion has long been included with the State of Maine - Moutain Division trackage on thursday and the 'Notch' run on friday the weekend before the the annual Hobo Notorcar Excursion in June of each year.

If you see a excursion priced at $1000, please don't get scared. It is not a real price and we won't let you make a reservation at that price. We use it as a hold as information is gathered. It really means the railroad has confirmed it and we have not recieved pricing from them. Please check back later for updated info. Thank you

NERCA & Ticket Leap Reservation Policy

On January 1, 2011 NERCA started to process all reservations thru TickeketLeap and payments thru PayPay. At the same time, we started accepting “Standby” for excursions that are sold out. We use this list as a first come, first serve basis as all are date and time stamped. We have impossed the following rules on all sales.

Terms of sales are

All excursions must be paid for at least 10 days prior an excursion. TicketLeap will automatically turn off sales at that time. For overnight trips the cutoff is 30 days prior to the event. For trips requiring a border crossing, ticket sales will be shut off 35 days before the event.

Refunds may be given if the EC is notified at least 30 days in advance or with the verification that an emergency caused the cancellation for a full refund.

All TicketLeap sales will be processed for a full refund thru TicketLeap and PayPal if a refund is requested within 45 days of the purchase. After 45 days from purchase, a check will be issued for the refund for the full excursion price minus 10% as a handling charge.

On any excursions that are sold out and within 30 days of the event, no refund will be issued unless your reservation can be sold to another party on the waiting list. If payment is received from a new party, a refund less 10% will be issued by check upon payment from the third party.

No refunds will be given for “NO SHOWS” or parties cancelling from an event event within 30 days of the excursion.

Events occasionally get cancelled by a railroad for unforeseen reasons. And NERCA still incurs expenses in organizing these excursions which expenses may include general overhead, office and phone expenses, expenses involved in procuring insurance and general overhead that including NERCA’s insurance, etc. web and phone expenses and other expenses. If an excursion is cancelled and you purchased your reservation within forty five days, a full refund will be issued to your credit card via TicketLeap and PayPal. After the forty five days, NERCA may deduct 10% for its expenses. Revised 12/19/2011

The last regularly scheduled passenger train over the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad tracks was operated between Kingston and Oneonta by the New York Central on March 31, 1954. The tracks were then cut back to Bloomville in 1965 to make way for construction of Interstate 88. Ownership of the tracks passed to Penn Central in 1968, and to the government-backed Conrail on April 1, 1976. The last westbound freight train over the mountains was operated by Conrail on September 26, 1976, with the return trip to gather up all remaining freight cars taking place on October 2.

The DURR is a subsidiary of the not-for-profit Catskill Revitalization Corporation, which owns the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad right of way between Highmount, New York (MP 41.4) and Bloomville, New York (MP 86). The new railroad started operations in 1983.

The DURR operates in Delaware County, New York on the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad tracks from MP 41.4 in Highmount, New York, where it connects with the Catskill Mountain Railroad, to Hubbell Corners, New York, MP 60.2. Currently the DURR's operations are limited to the portion between Arkville and Roxbury, New York, as the line to Highmount is out of service due to a small washout east of Arkville, and the line from just west of Roxbury at Kirkside park, MP 59.6, to Hubbell Corners is not serviceable.

The washout east of Arkville has now been repaired, with service expected to return to Highmount in 2010. The line between Hubbell Corners and Bloomville was abandoned and now services as a rail trail: the Catskill Scenic Trail.

The DURR suffered a major washout at Kelly's Corner on August 28, 2011, as a result of flooding due to Hurricane Irene. The East Branch of the Delaware River undermined about a quarter-mile of track along Route 30, and caused minor washouts and scouring at Halcottsville and other locations along the line. As of this writing, operations have been suspended until repairs can be made.

The Lehigh Railway LLC (LRWY) operates 56 miles of track in North Central PA. The mainline of Lehigh Railway runs from Athens to Mehoopany. The LRWY leases the line on a long term lease from Norfolk Southern. LRWY began operations in January 2009 and hauled 2500 cars in our first year of operation. They hauled 5000 cars in 2010.

The LRWY interchanges with Norfolk Southern in Sayre, PA. It also interchanges with regional carrier Reading & Northern at Mehoopany, PA and Towanda, PA.

LRWY utilizes five locomotives and 9 employees to operate and maintain this line.

The Massachusetts Central Railroad (reporting mark MCER) is a short line railroad in western Massachusetts, USA. It was established in 1979 to provide railroad transportation services between Palmer and South Barre on the old Right of Way (ROW) of the Ware River Railroad.

The old Ware River Railroad was an independent line that ran from Palmer to the Cheshire Railroad in Winchendon and was built in 1868. The first section, from Palmer to Gilbertville, opened in 1870, and the rest three years later.

Until 1873 it was leased to and operated by the New London Northern Railroad, it was eventually taken over by the Boston and Albany Railroad and run as its Winchendon Branch.

The B&A wanted to run the Ware River Line in conjunction with the Monadnock Railroad in order to gain access to the resort areas of Peterborough, NH. When the B&A failed to gain control of the Monadnock, the Ware River Line was not very profitable.

By 1968, the line came under the control of the Penn Central and tracks were abandoned between South Barre and Waterville, splitting the line in two. The Boston and Maine Railroad took over the line from Waterville to Winchendon and operated it until it was abandoned in 1984.

The Penn Central continued to operate the line south of Barre, but in 1975 all service between Gilbertville and South Barre were discontinued. Conrail operated the line between Palmer and Ware and applied for abandonment of the remainder of the line. By 1979, the MCER was formed and resumed operations. The train rarely ran north of Ware until 1999 when new rail customers restored freight service to Barre.

The General Manager is a long time NARCO member and NERCA has always enjoyed a great relationship with the railroad. This excursion is usually run in the spring as a "Mentoring Run" and for members to get their cars going for the year.

In early February 2010, the MM&A filed a notice of intent with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) that it intended to abandon 233 miles (375 km) of track in northern Maine, between Madawaska and Millinocket, part of the original Bangor & Aroostook Railroad's mainline, which had been bought by the MMA in 2003.

Affected lines include track serving Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou and Fort Kent. MMA lines between Millinocket and Montreal, Brownville and Searsport, and Madawaska to Van Buren are not included in this application.

According to the railroad, losses from operating the lines had reached the point where they were threatening the financial health of the entire railroad.[4] The STB subsequently postponed action on the request in late April, after the railroad and Maine officials agreed to negotiate to prevent the lines from being abandoned, which the state said could negatively affect the economy of the area. State legislators proposed that the state buy the lines and contract out freight rail service, similar to lines in Vermont.[5]

On October 20, 2010, the railroad reached an agreement to sell 233 miles (375 km) of track in the northern part of Maine to the state government for $20.1 million. The state would then contract operations on the lines to bidders once the deal was closed.[6][6] The US government also issued $10.5 million in funds to upgrade and maintain the line.[6]

On 17 December 2010, it was announced that the state was accepting bids for the operation of trackage the state was due to purchase, with the deadline for proposals being 19 January 2011.[7] On 28 December 2010, the STB announced it had approved the abandonment of the tracks in question, allowing the state to purchase them.[8]

On 5 April 2011, it was announced that the New Brunswick Southern Railway, using its Eastern Maine Railway subsidiary, had been awarded the contract to operate the lines in question.[9] The handover of operations was expected to occur on 1 July, and in order to operate its new trackage, the New Brunswick Southern expected to hire around 30 more employees, as well as acquire additional rolling stock.[10]

Pioneer Valley

Pioneer Valley Railroad

The Pioneer Valley Railroad is a service driven, customer-oriented short line railroad operating in western Massachusetts. Formed in 1982, the PVRR directly serves industries, warehouse operations and transload facilities in the cities of Westfield and Holyoke, MA.

The Pioneer Valley Railroad interchanges daily with CSXT in Westfield and has recently opened a second interchange providing access to Norfolk Southern in Holyoke. The two Class I interchanges provide an added level of service and economy for our customers.

The Pioneer Valley Railroad provides a high level of customer service offering multiple switches per day. Safety is always a high priority at PVRR as indicated by the ASLRRA Jake Award with Distinction we received in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Innovation and creativity are essential ingredients in PVRR's Marketing & Sales efforts. We enjoy a long record of success helping our customers even in the face of daunting marketplace obstacles. This was true again in 2007 as the ASLRRA awarded Pioneer Valley Railroad with its annual Marketing Award in recognition of the work it did with Yankee Candle.

In order to allow the many local industries that do not have direct rail access to take advantage of the railroad's service, the Pioneer Valley Railroad offers several multi-modal alternatives, providing various transloading-storage-truck delivery programs for a variety of packaged and bulk commodities. The Pioneer Valley Railroad enjoys a unique relationship with its sister company, Railroad Distribution Services of Massachusetts, which provides a wide range of warehousing and transload services.

9th Annual Snowflake Run

So, this is rated as the "Best Run of the Year ", And why wouldn't be.

It's an overnight run. With a great hotel at Lincoln, it's trackside and your wife does not have to make the bed,

A great run with our departure in Concord and a couple of stops on our way nort. We start at Concord and it saves you 170 miles of travel to get "up North" and returning.

The weather is cooler. You won't sweat, but you might want to bring a heater. The vegetation is gone allow great visability.

A smaller group of cars than the normal "Hobo Track Car" run in the spring. Experienced operators with fewer brakedowns. What could be better!! Well, add in the New England Southern Railroad and now you have two railroads on all their track for a great run.

So plan ahead for the 2012 Snowflake Run. You won't be disappointed.

The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad (reporting mark WNYP) is a short-line railroad that operates freight trains in Western New York and Northwest Pennsylvania, United States. The company is controlled by the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad, with which it does not connect. It started operations in 2001 on the Southern Tier Extension, a former Erie Railroad line between Hornell and Corry, owned by the public Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Steuben Southern Tier Extension Railroad Authority (STERA). Through acquisitions and leases, the line was extended from Corry to Meadville in 2002 and to Oil City in 2006, and in 2007 the WNY&P leased and sub-leased portions of the north-south Buffalo Line, a former Pennsylvania Railroad line mostly built by a predecessor of the defunct Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway. The two lines cross at Olean.
